This animoto video represents the SAT word digression which means to stray away from the main point. In the video you can see that we used multiple ways to represent digressions. In our animoto video we used images, a slogan and, a song. We used about six images to represent digression. The images that we chose show a way of someone not getting to the point. For example in one of the images it was a math professor writing a math equation but ended up drawing a stick figure. This shows digression because he’s not getting to the main point of the math equation instead, he drew something else. We took a further step into showing how this video represents digression with a slogan. Our slogan at the end of the video is “not getting to the point”. We chose this slogan because it’s similar to the definition of digression which is to stray away from the main point. A final way we wanted to show how this video represents digression is with a song. The song we picked was Bohemian Rhapsody by Queens. We picked this song because in one section of the song it makes no sense to what the message is supposed to be. We thought that this song perfectly means digression because the part we pick strays away from the main point.

This canva creation represents the SAT word submissive which means meek and rule follower. We used various forms to represent submissive. In our canva creation, we used an image, slogan and, speech bubbles. We wanted the whole poster to have a meaning of submissive so we chose and image that would best fit that. The image shows a woman on her knees give food to a man on the bed with his hands above his head with a smile on his face. We had chosen this image because we felt as though it was conveying the woman being submissive towards her husband. Since we thought people could interpret this image in anyway we decided to add speech bubbles to take a further step into showing how this is submissive. The woman is saying to her husband "I have your breakfast ", while the husband responds "you better". We had chosen these words because the woman is obeying the husband by bringing him breakfast as she is supposed to. The last way we wanted to show that this poster shows submissiveness is with a slogan. Our slogan says "do what your told", we had chosen this slogan because the meaning of submissive is rule follower. Also because it ties in with our image and speech bubble. The slogan is to do what ur told and in the picture the woman is giving her husband his breakfast as the she is supposed too.
Amy Schumer’s video, “Size 12”, sheds light on how plus size women get treated at stores for asking for a bigger size. This source was chosen because it is a topic where many people have a common issue and not everyone knows of this particular problem. In the video Amy uses superiority theory, exaggeration and, satire to make this topic funny. Schumer uses humor effectively by showing how plus sized woman are being treated in stores just because they are a different size than the media portrays women.
Amy Schumer uses the superiority theory in her video by making it seem like a thin body is what you want over a larger body. When Amy asks for the crop-top she was looking at, in a size 12 the worker immediately seemed perturbed in saying "Like...a...UK 12? Which is a size eight or like a Japanese 12, which is an American toddlers three." Amy goes on to say she just wants an American size 12 but, you can see how the store clerk is trying to undermine what size Amy wants by trying to fit it in the size society puts in. Another way Schumer uses the superiority theory is when the store clerk says "you're scaring the thinner customers." This is showing how the store clerk feels that the 'thinner' customers have more saying than Amy does who is still a customer but, in the store clerk eyes she is a larger customer. Therefore Amy is showing how she uses the superiority theory to make it seem like a thinner body is what you want to achieve. Amy Schumer uses exaggeration in her "size 12" by showing how people exaggerate clothing size. In one part of the video Amy goes underneath to find more clothes and come up with an even smaller shirt than the one on the top of the table. Amy clearly states "these are even smaller" and hold up a shirt that would fit a doll. Amy is using exaggeration on how this clearly doesn't fit her because it wouldn't fit anyone. Another way Amy is trying to exaggerate clothing sizes, is when the store clerk brings her to there special room just for people like her. In the video the store clerk states " Ma'am do you want to try this on?" while Amy confused on why she is holding that responds "that is a tarp wood.” This shows how exaggeration is being used in the form of how people’s clothing. Therefore Amy uses exaggeration by showing the extreme reaction of clothing sizes. Amy Schumer uses satire effectively in her "size 12" video by showing in overall the ridiculousness that plus size women are being treated in stores and society's views. Satire is making fun of someone else's stupidity. For example in the video when Amy was given the tarp wood as a piece of clothing the store clerk had responded with "yes, it's perfect for covering the pool or your problem areas." First of all Amy was give a tarp wood as a piece of clothing since, she had asked for a size 12. This shows how ridiculous plus size woman are being treated by asking for a bigger size. Therefore Amy is using satire effectively because she is making fun of all the stores that do have plus sizes but aren't the correct sizes. Some stores don't even have plus sizes. Society's view of plus sizes women is to cover everything up. To conclude Amy Schumer sheds light on the fact that plus size woman are not being treated right. This topic is important because woman or anyone who is plus size might not feel comfortable in their own skin. Woman get so much for being plus size and to get it while they're shopping (to make themselves feel beautiful) is too much in my opinion. Amy makes this humor effective by using the superiority theory, exaggeration and, satire. Another reason it's effective because even though it is humorous it still shows the viewers that plus size woman do have to go through. This video is funny but it still has a strong and powerful message. Being plus size is beautiful and no one should be put down for their weight. In this open letter about women who shame catcalling by Wendy Lintner, she talked about how as an older woman she needs the catcalling to justify herself as a woman. I had picked this because I felt as if this would be interesting to see why someone would want to be catcalled. Wendy was making fun of how women want to be justified as a human being but, she felt like people in their 30's need this justification. Wendy sheds light on the fact that catcalling is not a bad thing and some people need it. In the open letter she stated "Some of us are trying really hard over here and we appreciate having our efforts acknowledged, so stop speaking for all of us with your catcalling shaming videos and your angry blog posts bemoaning how awful it is being told how hot you are by total fucking strangers who aren’t married to you and are therefore forced to tell you your ass looks great, even though you both know it doesn’t look great at all". This is showing how Wendy thinks catcalling isn't such a bad thing; she needs it because she wants to know that other people think she looks great instead of just her husband. Another example of how Wendy thinks catcalling is a good thing is when she stated " Do you know what comes after brassieres? Harnesses, that’s what. All we had was the occasional lewd and lascivious comment yelled out by some homeless man on our walk to the subway but you, you took that away from us. And for what? So you could feel “valued as a human being?” Who the fuck are you? What makes you so fucking special?" Wendy is trying to show people that you can't speak to everyone she in particular likes to be catcalled. She is trying to show people that older women need catcalling. Her body is getting older and she doesn't feel as beautiful as she did before but, catcalling is her way to feel beautiful. One last example of Wendy shows how older women need catcalling is when she said "find a way to self-select as a woman not wanting to be verbally accosted by, say, turning thirty and eating a few too many cheese scones- even though you’ve developed lactose intolerance-so the rest of us can have our physical appearances validated in really unhealthy ways?". Finally Wendy is suggesting that catcalling is needed for older woman. They need this validation from other guys that don't see her at all and to know that she looks pretty.
Vocab: bemoaning-sorrow over something she was bemoaning over the death of her father Lewd- Crude and offensive in a sexual way Tom spent all day outside and making lewd comments to woman Both humor and traditional sources addressed the Micheal Brown issue. What happened to Michael Brown that uproar the whole world was that he was stole some cigarettes. Michael Brown was stopped by the police when he put his hands up the police shot him. The Jon Stewart sources talks in a more broader sense than the CNN source. Jon Stewart talks in a way of a race off in the world, it was as if the Micheal Brown Issue was something to get it started talking about it. In one part he started to say "If only Michael Brown instead of holding his hands over his head had reached down to his waist and lifted up his shirt to show the gun he did not actually have well, this whole tragedy could of been avoided". He used this example because he was appalled by the fact that if a person of color or African american would have done this then they would have been dead. It showed the ignorance of people. While in the CNN source they talk about a more in depth of Michael Brown. CNN talked more on a serious note, CNN talked with Michael Brown's parents, what had happened to him and many other things. Both the CNN and the Jon Steward Coverage made me feel two different feelings. For the CNN coverage I felt despondent for the family of Micheal Brown while, the Jon Stewart coverage lightened the mood. The Jon Steward coverage used sarcasm and exaggeration. He exaggerated his reactions to what people were saying. He also used sarcasm when someone had said something so ridiculous for example when someone said that they left there vacation to come here his reaction was" Of course you are! An unarmed black teenager gunned down in the street by police under suspicious circumstances! Who wouldn't cut their vacation short to register their fury? You'd have to be a monster or in case enjoying a particularly nice vacation". This shows how Jon used sarcasm and exaggeration. The tone in his voice was evident of sarcasm. Superiority theory apples to the Jon Stewart coverage because Jon is making fun of what people are saying about the Michael Brown issue and contradicting what they are saying. Both text have a different way of getting the issue a crossed but for me I would have to say the CNN is much more effective to know the whole issue. The CNN is much more effective with telling the whole story, being specific on what happened and it doesn't stray away from being on topic. Vocabulary: Demonstrators- A person who takes part in a public protest meeting or match Like you said, the goal is chaos, which can then be blamed on the demonstrators. Transparency- The condition of being transparent In shallow seas the transparency is always reduced in rough weather. Part 1: Thinking big What are the topics addressed by this source? The topics that are addressed in this video reflect on comparing how you have to do certain thing with sexuality but not your race. She mostly talks in her video her race which is African American and her sexuality which is a lesbian/gay. She doesn't really talk mush of other any topic than what I listed. How does this source use humor to address those topics? Wanda Sykes uses humor in various of ways. In her tone of voice how she used the stage, her expressions, the examples she gave for addressing her topic. In her video she stated ¨ Any thing but black Jesus!¨ this quote she is pretending to be her mother reacting to her confessing she is black. I think this shows just how she uses humor because in the video she is saying this quote in a different speech she is using expressions. Wanda is yelling, praying to the lord not to black and it kinda shows how people react to saying there gay in a exaggerated way. Which part did you find most humorous and why? The part in this video i found the most funniest is when she started to say "give her cancer lord give her cancer lord anything but black lord" when she said this it kinda dawned on me just how people/parents react to coming out as gay. It was funny because caner is such a terrible thing to have and Wanda ( playing her mother) would rather have cancer than being black. The way she was also saying this was hysterical. I mostly found the whole video funny. From when she was explain how you don't have to come out as black till the very end of the video. Part 2: Video discussion What my opinions on the video were: My opinions on the video was that everything that Wanda Sykes had said was true. Even though it was supposed to be comedic I had found it funny and very informational. I had found it as a double standard that you have to come out to your friends family or peers about your sexuality but in other situations its different. Another thought/opinion I had whole watching this was is that how people would react to someone saying they were gay. What my peers thought: Most of my peers thought that this was very funny. One of my peer was even cracking up while watching the video. Laughing about almost everything Wanda Sykes had said/talked about. Another one of my peers had thought that what she was saying about what you have to do with being gay you don't have to do with being black was true. Most of my peers thought that what she was saying was true. Part 3: She uses generalized words finding a vocab was hard |
